Armen Ashotyan: ‘One Zone, One Road’ Can Be One More Guarantee for Ensuring Stability in South Caucasus

On July 7, the Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations Armen Ashotyan received the delegation of the Shanghai Institute for International Studies (SIIS). Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Armenia Tian Erlong and the representatives of the Analytical Council of the RA NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations also attended the meeting.

Welcoming the guests in the RA National Assembly, Armen Ashotyan highlighted the meeting with Shanghai Institute for International Studies and noted that he could serve as a basis for further cooperation with the Analytical Council. The representatives of SIIS Delegation also underlined the importance and opportunities of cooperation and expressed hope over the implementation of the further joint projects.

Armen Ashotyan presented the priorities of the RA foreign policy, highlighted the expansion of cooperation in different spheres with China and the full realization of the existing potential. In this context ‘One Zone, One Road’ Chinese mega project was greatly highlighted, Armenia’s interest towards that project and within that framework the possibilities of cooperation. Armen Ashotyan emphasized the role of the project as a factor activating the economy of the region, which can become guarantee for ensuring regional stability.

The sides also touched upon the issue of regional stability. In this aspect they underlined the fact that any economic programme can be beneficial only in the conditions of security and lasting peace. Regarding this issue Armen Ashotyan indicated Armenia’s commitment to the preservation of the regional stability, at the same time documented that one-sided ensuring of stability is not so easy.

In the course of the meeting the Head of UNESCO chair on Human Rights, Democracy and European Studies of Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences (YSLU) Tigran Torosyan, the Director of Noravank Scientific-Educational Foundation Gagik Harutyunyan, the Senior Analyst of the Regional Studies Center (RSC) David Shahnazaryan also expressed their viewpoints. At the end of the meeting the sides discussed the possibilities of further cooperation.
